#89 A Prison or Jail

101 Places You Gotta See Before You're 12
#89 A Prison or Jail

8/5/14
Boise, Idaho - Old Idaho Penitentiary
Mom, Kylee, Tyler

My sister Mandi planned an outing to the Old Penitentiary last week while my aunt Kathy was in town. The "Old Pen" was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973. It's crazy to think that it was still operating just 41 years ago. It was interesting reading some of the prisoners' stories that were posted around the penitentiary. We went inside a few of the cell houses. The cells were so tiny- some of them had four beds in a room the size of one of our bathrooms. Here's a picture of Hailey, Kylee, and Beki in the barber shop in one of the cell houses.

Below is a picture of Kylee in front of one of the cells on death row - right next to the room where people were hung.

We also saw the basketball court, the guard houses, learned about some of the tattoo "art" and saw the laundry house - complete with a special dryer just for socks! Our final stop was solitary confinement - tiny windowless cells. That would definitely have been a dreadful place to live. This cell that Kylee is standing in actually would have held 4-6 people. Can you imagine???
